The carton box compressive strength mainly from the technical performance indicators of cardboard or paperboard. The functionality of the carton box packaging primarily depends on the flutes of the corrugated board and their combination, thickness, grade, performance. So the carton box design considering the quantitative (g/m2) on form of corrugated cardboard tissue paper, inside paper, core paper, sandwich paper (double-layer corrugated board), grade, and its combination ratio and other factors.
The basic principle of carton box design is to make the strength of the carton box reaches the circulation environment requirements. A formula can be used: carton box design strength Pd ≥ carton box stacking strength. Here, the design strength represents the subjective results of the carton box design, the stacking strength represents the objective requirements of the distribution environment. The stacking strength refers to a certain volume weight of cardboard boxes under the influence of the minimum bearing strength under environmental factors such as warehousing, transportation, handling, climate circulation without crushing (actually refers to the bottom of the carton box).
There are variety of calculation methods for the strength, such as Kelly Carter (Kellicutt) formula from the US, APM formula from Australia, McKee formula from France etc., all calculated the carton box compressive strength with empty containers, the common denominator of these calculations are projections by the ring crush strength of the paperboard, or calculate the corrugated board edge crush strength to the overall bearing strength of carton box. However, due to its material properties data, the original constant, the expression formula are different, the results obvious different from each other.
Something need to be clear here: the actual pressure capacity is not equal to the carton box strength design of the empty container. Actual pressure capability of the cardboard boxes should have a great relationship with the nature of the interior goods (or individual packaging), because the contents in the carton box can share in varying degrees of the top load. For example, the rigid objects or containers (glass bottles, metal cans, wooden boxes, hard plastic container, hard liner, etc.) have greater support for the carton box. In this case, the calculation of the carton box design, If the designer already know the the property of the contents, he should consider this factor in proper control of the redundancy during the strength design of the empty carton box.
